Veo 2: Google's AI generates Hollywood-quality video
2025
In late 2024, Google released Veo 2, a video generation model that produced output nearly indistinguishable from professional footage. Resolution up to 4K, consistent physics, realistic motion, and coherent multi-second narratives.
Unlike earlier video models that produced dreamlike, physically impossible sequences, Veo 2 understood how the world works. Water flowed correctly. Objects had consistent mass. People moved naturally. Camera movements followed cinematic conventions.
Filmmakers and advertisers were the first adopters. Pre-visualization (creating rough versions of scenes before expensive shoots) became trivially easy. "Show me this scene at golden hour with a crane shot moving left to right." Seconds later, a convincing preview appeared.
For independent creators, the implications were even more dramatic. The cost of creating professional-looking video content dropped by orders of magnitude. A student with an idea could produce visuals that previously required a production crew.
Google integrated Veo 2 into YouTube's creation tools, allowing creators to generate B-roll, transitions, and even entire sequences from text descriptions.
The ethical debates were predictable and necessary: deepfakes, misinformation, copyright concerns. Google responded with invisible watermarking (SynthID) embedded in every generated frame.
