OpenAI prediction: 'AI will be the greatest wealth creator in history'
2025
Sam Altman has been consistent in his economic prediction: AI will create unprecedented wealth. "The total amount of wealth that AI will generate is going to be staggering, likely more than any technology in history, including the internet," he stated in 2025.
His reasoning: AI doesn't just improve one industry; it improves every industry simultaneously. Healthcare, education, energy, manufacturing, services, research: all become more productive at the same time. The compounding effect is multiplicative.
But Altman has been equally insistent about the second part of his argument: this wealth must be broadly distributed. In "Moore's Law for Everything" (2021) and subsequent writings, he proposed mechanisms including: - Universal basic income funded by AI-generated wealth - Equity stakes in AI companies distributed to all citizens - New taxation frameworks that capture AI-driven productivity gains - Investment in retraining and transition support for displaced workers
"The challenge isn't creating wealth," Altman argued. "It's distributing it fairly. If AI makes everything cheaper and more abundant, but only benefits shareholders, we've failed."
Whether these predictions prove correct, and whether the proposed distribution mechanisms are adequate, remains to be seen. But the scale of the prediction (AI as the most transformative economic force in human history) seems increasingly hard to dismiss given the trajectory of the past three years.
