OpenAI hits $2 billion in revenue: the fastest-growing tech company ever

2024

By late 2024, OpenAI was generating over $2 billion in annualized revenue, an unprecedented growth rate for a technology company. ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) and the API business were both growing explosively.

The revenue validated a controversial bet: that consumers would pay for AI assistance. Before ChatGPT, conventional wisdom said AI would be a feature embedded in other products, not a standalone product people would pay for directly.

OpenAI proved this wrong. Millions of individuals (developers, writers, students, professionals) were paying $20/month for ChatGPT Plus. Enterprises were paying significantly more for team and enterprise tiers.

The business was also remarkably capital-efficient for a growth-stage company. Unlike ride-sharing or food delivery companies that needed to subsidize transactions, OpenAI's marginal cost of serving additional users (while not zero) was manageable and decreasing as they optimized.

The revenue growth attracted more investment. OpenAI raised at increasingly massive valuations: $80 billion, then $150 billion+, making it one of the most valuable private companies in history.

For the AI industry, the message was clear: there was a real, large, growing market for AI products. Not someday in the future, but right now.
