Gemini prediction: Demis Hassabis sees AGI solving science
2025
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and 2024 Nobel Prize winner for AlphaFold, has been consistent in his predictions: AGI is coming soon, and its greatest impact will be in science.
"Within the next decade, I believe AI will be making scientific discoveries that would win Nobel Prizes if a human had made them," he said in early 2025. "Not just assisting scientists, but autonomously identifying important problems and solving them."
His confidence comes from AlphaFold's success. That system solved protein structure prediction, a 50-year grand challenge in biology, in a way that no human team could have achieved. Over 200 million protein structures were predicted, accelerating drug discovery worldwide.
Hassabis envisions Gemini's successors doing the same for materials science, mathematics, climate modeling, and physics. Not replacing human scientists, but expanding the frontier of what's possible to explore.
"Science is bottlenecked by the number of good ideas and the speed of experiments. AI can generate hypotheses faster than any human and design experiments more cleverly. The limiting factor becomes lab automation, not intellectual capacity."
The implication for young scientists entering the field today: the most important skill isn't memorizing facts or running standard experiments. It's learning to collaborate with AI: to ask the right questions and validate the answers.
