Claude learns to code: 100K context and beyond
2025
One of Claude's most celebrated capabilities is its massive context window: up to 200,000 tokens. That's roughly 150,000 words, or an entire novel, or a substantial codebase.
For developers, this changed the game. Instead of feeding an AI small snippets of code and hoping it understood the bigger picture, they could paste entire repositories. Claude could then reason about architecture, find bugs across file boundaries, and suggest refactors that required understanding dozens of interconnected modules.
Companies reported using Claude to onboard new developers: "Just feed it the codebase and ask it to explain the architecture." What used to take weeks of reading documentation could now happen in a conversation.
The long context also enabled new workflows in legal document review, academic research, and financial analysis, anywhere professionals needed to synthesize large volumes of text quickly.
As one developer put it: "It's like having a colleague who has genuinely read everything."
