Anthropic raises $7.3 billion: safety-first AI attracts serious capital
2024
In 2024, Anthropic completed a series of funding rounds totaling $7.3 billion, one of the largest raises in tech history. Investors included Amazon, Google, Spark Capital, and others.
What's remarkable is what they were betting on. Anthropic's pitch wasn't "we'll build the most powerful AI"; it was "we'll build the most responsible AI, and that will make it more powerful in the long run."
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers (including Dario and Daniela Amodei), Anthropic was born from a belief that AI safety research needed to be done by organizations actually building frontier models, not just studying them from the outside.
The funding allowed Anthropic to scale its compute infrastructure, hire top researchers, and invest in long-term safety research that wouldn't produce immediate commercial returns.
As Dario Amodei explained: "If you're going to build powerful AI systems, you'd better be the kind of organization that takes safety seriously. The alternative, building power without responsibility, is not something the world can afford."
The market agreed. By 2025, Claude was competitive with or ahead of rivals on most benchmarks while maintaining a reputation for being more careful and more honest.
