Anthropic prediction: AGI within reach by 2027
2025
In a series of interviews in 2025, Dario Amodei shared his prediction: AI systems that outperform humans at virtually all cognitive tasks could arrive within 2-3 years.
"I believe there's about a 50% chance we'll have what I call 'powerful AI' by 2026 or 2027," he said. Not AGI in the science-fiction sense of conscious machines, but systems so capable at intellectual tasks that they could accelerate scientific research, engineering, and creative work by orders of magnitude.
The prediction was based on observed scaling trends, algorithmic improvements, and the rapid pace of capability gains in recent model generations. Each generation seemed to not just improve incrementally, but gain qualitatively new abilities.
What made Amodei's prediction unusual was that it came with an action plan, not just a timeline. "If this is possible, then we need to get safety right now, not later. We need governance frameworks now. We need international coordination now."
The AI community was split. Some found the timeline too aggressive. Others thought it was too conservative. But most agreed with the underlying message: whether AGI comes in 2027 or 2032, the time to prepare is now.
